This video will illustrate how to replace the M.2 Solid State Drive in your ThinkPad X1 Carbon (2nd and 3rd Gen).

If possible, back up your data before replacing the internal storage drive. Create recovery media or order it from Lenovo:

** IMPORTANT: To protect against electrostatic discharge, place your machine on a clean, non-conductive workspace, such as a kitchen table or countertop, and use plastic or coated tools when replacing internal components.

For more detailed information on electrostatic discharge and how to prevent it, please watch our “Understanding Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)” video:

  1. Hi Tim, I wanted to thank you for the video showing how to change the powerjack.

I had an old X1 from 2012 laying around, but good to use in case of need. So I found a sparepart over the net for around USD 5-6 and replaced it. Thanks! Björn

  2. First: EXCELLENT VIDEO!! THANKS!! However: What a clumsy, impractical design! 7 screws and one more inside! And you have to remove the sim card tray! And alter your BIOS settigs! And mess with the internal power cable! Wow, Lenovo! I am not impressed with this at all!

  3. I HAVE A 3rd gen x1 thinkpad and my ssd m2 does not have that format? it only is i keyway…not 2 lik e the one you are installing..could you tell me what will work in a 3rd gen thinkpad x1 carbon for a ssd hardrive,,,lenovo is stupid,,,1st they weld the ram to the board and start with 4gigs only.. then they use this weird keyway for their ssd,,,unbelievable…to many stupid people working for them,,i liked it better when it was IBM overseeing everything.

  4. Hi thank you for the videos but I have X1C3 20BS and the shape of SSD connector is different from the one shown on your video. I just tried a CRUCIAL P1 3D NAND, NVMe, PCIe, M.2, normally this SSD was supposed to work according Crucial website. But when booting my computer with that new SSD, it does not work, got error 2103. What kind of SSD is inside my computer?
    SSD model is SAMSUNG MZHPV256HDGL-000L1
I really want to upgrade my SSD.
Thank you in advance for your additional information.

  7. Hi Folks, Lenovo Support – Can someone confirm whether Samsung 860 EVO M.2 2280 SSD (1TB) will be supported by X1 carbon 3rd generation (20BS model)? If not, can you let me know which 1 TB drive is compatible with 20BS model? Thank you!
