Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2019 Review

Despite a smattering of small complaints, I’m mostly pleased with the Thinkpad X1 Carbon. It’s a strong business laptop that appeals to its diehard fans for good reason. I love the build, keyboard and performance, and battery life is great if you don’t mind a less-sharp and bright screen. For its $1,200 starting price though, the X1 Carbon has serious competition, specifically from the likes of the Surface Laptop 2 and Huawei Matebook 14, which are similarly powerful albeit arguably more attractive. The Laptop 2 also lasts longer. But Lenovo’s appealing keyboard alone may just keep its fans coming back for more.

  • In credible laptops but that ctrl fn key thing is ridiculous. They like to have 100 different models of notebooks, offer the ctrl -fn option model. Typists love thinkpads and hate that swap nonsense.

  • My problem with this great keyboard: the Page Up & Page Down buttons soooo close to the arrows (left, right, up and down). I have a lot of mis hits. So annoying! Anyone else with this problem?
I returned my X1 Carbon and bought a 2015 MacBook Pro. Really happy now!

  • Does anyone know from experience how this laptop compares to the Dell XPS 15 9560 of a similar build? Battery life?

  • My Lenovos never last very long but they were not thinkpads. I use primarily for business emails, running reports and heavy excel. My last Lenovo was 2-in-1 and the laptop keyboard took a dump over night. For media I mainly use Netflix and YouTube so it’s disappointing to get 2-3 years of good use. I’m getting a new XPS this year.

  • I agree about the buttons above the trackpad. I hardly use them. I wish the trackpad was expanded instead.

  • In the BIOS you can switch [FN] with [Ctrl]. In most Lenovo Laptops.

  • The P1 is the best in the Thinkpad line for Enterprise…..it has all the things missing in the x1 carbon including a better thermal solution of two fans, updatable, with no complaints spected with a i5 and FHD screen. Battery life is always a problem with any thin and light with high specs. Zeon users should consider the docking solution for maximum power output.

Software does limit full capability unless you have it plugged in which is sensible. Have not tried it with Enterprise oios or linux yet. Several updates to firmware have given the battery a longer time envelope. Probably the best you can get in this category at this time..

The biggest chritisium on lenovo is that they will not factory install third party software for visually impaired employees. Unless the chineese start to fit in with the EU and UK markets on disability, they will continue to loose market share in Europe. Interested if in the future if you could spec linux and AMD.

  • So every complaint about the X1C keyboard is a complaint about Lenovo keyboards going back decades? And not a single complimentary comment about the keyboard quality?

  • A typical Girlie review….kind of a breakup story…I’m X1C user since 2013….presently with 6th Gen in hand…Was planning to go for this year’s upgrade as this has 10th gen i7 but your break up story has finally led me to MBP…..actually X1C has heating problem with high intensity applications and programming.
